First WIP!: Tealight Winter Scene

Hi everyone!

I am very new to using Blender, have been looking through the forum, and learning as much as I can for about 3 weeks. Today I felt tired with learning, learning, learning…so I decided to try and make something

I hope this isn’t too basic to be posting in here, but I feel like I need a little advice. This model is going to be used as part of a picture I want to render, but trying to make this model properly first before moving onto the full scene.

Basically I live in Northern Ireland and if anyone has heard it has snowed extremely heavily in my area. I love the light blue glow of the snowy scene outside with my tealights at the window, so I want to make that  I’ll continue to post my work on the scene and models in here as I go.

Anyway this is my candle holder (sorry for bad quality i only have a webcam :frowning: )

And this is how far I’ve got: (took me 4 hours, please don’t laugh lol)

The final scene will be quite dark, but i’m putting the glass pieces in front of a texture to get the IOR and stuff right. Its almost how I want it, but its not dark enough refraction inside the glass, and I don’t think it looks exactly right.

I also have no clue about making the candles lit but I will research that more, if anyone has any tips or advice I would welcome it!

I have (hopefully!) attached my blend file in case anyone wants to look, or wants to show me a better way of doing something.

Thanks!
SReid

Nice start and welcome to the forums! I played with your file for a few minutes, maybe this could get you moving in some good directions.

Changes I made: Disabled Ray and AO (for speed you should turn them back on), Added DOF, Glare, 3-point Lighting, Flame Mesh, Indirect Lighting.

Wow! Wasn’t expecting such a quick reply, and with a new file to study! Your changes are awesome and way closer to what i’m trying to achieve! I see you added nodes and things, which I haven’t learned about yet, and thank you for making a flame for me! Am studying the settings for that atm. This is more than enough for me to work on  Thank you for spendin’ your time to help!

Ok just thought I’d show what I’m doing so far, have decided to work on the window. Have taken a photo outside my window, and followed Andrew Price’s tutorial on creating a foggy window.

I took his final.blend and altered it to look more like my window here at home. I liked his scene for doing this quickly but I might start my own file from scratch after I’ve learned enough from this setup!
