Fixing artefacts on smooth curves surfaces?

Hi folks. I know the usual answer is throw more geometry at the problem, but there must be some simple things I’m missing, I come up against this all the time.

Take a cylinder, make it smooth, then cut a hole in it. There will invariably be a disruption in the smoothness of the surface.

Anyone have any advice other than give the cylinder a thousand faces?

Thanks.

Those type of artifacts tend to be caused by long thin faces at the interface of the cut.

Try modifying the topology in that area to remove the long thin faces.

You need to have perimeter loops following the shape of the object, having close to equally sized quads will also minimize distortions.

give your topology some corrections, like this:

Besides all the information from everyone, you might want to take a look at this…it works quite well.
