Flickering Black Artefact in Final Render – Bevel Modifier Fix (Animation Focus)

Hi all,

I recently ran into a frustrating issue where a flickering black artefact appeared on one of my objects during final render animation—despite everything looking fine in the viewport. Turned out the culprit was the Bevel Modifier.

This issue seems especially common in animation workflows, where subtle geometry shifts between frames can cause overlapping bevels to produce shading artefacts.

Either turn on Geometry Overlap Clamping or Disable the Modifier.

Overlapping Geometry When animating objects with a Bevel Modifier, geometry can subtly shift between frames. If Clamp Overlap is disabled, bevel edges may intersect or fold, causing shading artefacts that flicker or persist across frames.

This fix is critical for animation, where even minor overlaps can cause visible artefacts that ruin continuity.

Additional Checks (especially for animated scenes)

Normals – Recalculate (Alt + N) to ensure consistency across frames Geometry – Remove doubles, clean up non-manifold edges Materials – Check for missing textures or unstable node setups Lighting – Confirm lights are visible in both viewport and render Camera – Adjust clipping range to avoid slicing geometry mid-frame

*This bevel-related artefact is subtle in stills but amplified in motion. Animators often overlook it until render time—when it’s too late. Catch it early by previewing with motion and enabling Clamp Overlap as a default.
