Flooded carpark - Short film

Hmm I agree a bit with AtomicD, vans like that are usually suppliers and are located in loading bays here. If they are trade vehicles, then yes they would be parked down there with ladders etc. to fix the broken down air conditioning etc.

Could I suggest that you remember to animate the mass of the vehicle when it is thumped by all that water, possibly with a bit of lift and float (as it is a big empty ballon). Would the mud map get washed off?
Still looking great BTW.

You and I must think on the same wave length David :stuck_out_tongue: I’ve had the same idea in my head about animating the vehicle and washing the mud map off. The water will hit it from behind and push it into a concrete pillar breaking the windscreen (in slow motion of course  ). And I will try to get the suspension looking correct.

I’ll upload an animation of the fluorescent light shortly.

Thanks again for the support

Those lighting tests look great!

The closeup looks very Fincher!

It’s so fun to watch you making progress on this. I read through every page and watched every video and it’s coming along great.

My only complaint is that the water is too… sparkly and “particly” looking. If this were real, the water would be foamy, more opaque (with a cloudy brownish tinge too it… depending on the water source), and there would be more mist instead of beads of water. It would look more like white water rapids. Right now it looks like someone’s pouring clear bottled water into the garage. This amount of water needs to look threatening and powerful.

Example:

Also I do have a suggestion for your video. Before the water rushes in, I think it would be kind of cool to have it just pause for a few seconds… sound goes down… lights start to flicker a little (very subtly). Think “the calm before the storm”. Then all the sudden the water just rushes in. Sound comes back on full blast… mayhem ensues.

This is looking really great. It’s entertaining to watch the work in progress, too.
(FWIW, I like the white van. It is indeed exactly what I would expect to see in an eerie deserted carpark)
Nice one. Keep it up!

The modelling is good,The texturing is Excellent!and the lighting is fantastic!
if you dont mind could you share how you did the flouresents?
The water seems out of proportion, and gooey.but all in all Great stuff!
Rick

I’ve been thinking the exact same thing!! And I honestly don’t know what I can do about it. Flowline and Realflow both have complicated algorithms that calculate mist and foam and ripples vs. mass etc. But Blenders is extremely limited!

Not to say I’m giving up mind you, I’m going to try using a complex system of particles to achieve mist. And I’ll try and tweak the ‘Float’ and tracer settings to make it look foamy.

Or course!
It’s all about the compositor :stuck_out_tongue:

And here’s the materials as well:

Van Progress:

Still to add: Interior, tail lights, roof rack with ladder and muddy texture map.

And the littlw paint marks where kids have opened their doors carelessly when getting out of the back seat. And as it is a work vehicle it would be driven much harder than a personal car, so would have a lot of brake dust acumulating on the front wheels.
And then there are the minor scratches around the handle where the fingers scratch as you get in. And the funny streaking on the window where the crappy “needs replacing” windscreen wipers have been smearing oil since the last service.

Maybe you should consider using the new physics release to simulate water with solid smoke meshes?

New physics release?

Is this something that’s included with 2.48? Or were you referring to this guy’s smoke project?

Yeah Farsthary’s volumetrics may be integrated into the Physics branch of development. His dense volumetrics may make better animated water than the fluid sims for large volumes. My guess tho’ no one has suggested this, but with the right material I think it shoould work.

Hmmm very interesting idea. Thinking outside the box
I’m not familar with how the volumetics behave, but if it gets released anytime soon I might give it a shot

Update:
The wheels were looking extremely plain so I decided to re-model them using arrays. I then dirtied them up with textures

Brake disc:

Van with the new wheels:

I had a lot of fun texturing the wheels, so I look forward to doing the rest of the van!

Added interior and windscreen grunge maps:

UV mapped van and added mud and bug splatter

Added a roofrack, ladder and that PVC tube they all seem to carry around with them

If you see something that doesn’t look right or could be better, let me know!

Oh and one last thing! I had an idea to place a wheel lock on the tires, that parking inspectors place on illegally parked vehicles in the US.
Like this one:http://flathat.wm.edu/2006-11-10/parking.jpg

However these aren’t used in Australia, so I’m not sure if they placed on one tire or all the tires? Also what are these devices called?

Could someone from the US fill me in?

Cheers!

I was listening to a police prosecutor on the radio the other day and he suggested that “wheel clamps” aren’t used here because they impede your ability to comply with the parking lot rules of no standing. So if you are asked to move the car you can’t if it has a wheel lock fitted.
He also said that Shopping centres will occasionaly do a blitz and remove a heap of illegaly parked cars over a couple of days. Apparently this cures everyone of bad habits untill next year!
I would suggest that you put some of those stupid flyers from the local Gymnasium or paint shop under the windscreen wiper and maybe substitute the aerial for a bent coathanger shaped like Australia (substitiute favourite country).
Can I say that you are remarkably quick and insanely accurate! Good job.

Model suggestions: Sometimes Tradies (trade workers) have red cloths hanging from the ladder or pipe at the rear of the van. To stop you from clipping it. There seems to be no sun damage on the black trim at the front, often this plastic goes a grey colour over time. Just in patches tho’. Sometimes they have a convex mirror mounted at the back to dsee when they reverse.

Looks great, did I mention that already? Seats would have worn a bit on the drivers side (thining or lightening of the fabric) and there are often discarded drink cups and food wrappers on the passenger seat, with a log book and pens (that don’t work when you are writing them a cheque).
The mud spray looks terrific too, and I think that there would be some residual mud on the wheel rims where the spray came from, this would have a radial spray pattern from the edges out.

This looks great so far!

We call them boots and they are only placed on one wheel because that’s all you really need to keep the car from moving.
