Flow of Character Model

I was wondering if it would be best when creating character models to separate limbs etc as separate objects or if it’s alright to start out with one object and just extrude it out. I realize accessories etc should be done with separate objects… but… when it comes to just the main model itself… extruding a UV Sphere out so it’s the whole character is fine? I want to know if I will run into and problems if I were to start rigging it etc. I started out with a UV Sphere and extruded etc it out into this:

Depends. For example if the torso section is going to be covered by clothing, or for example the character is wearing a scarf that will conceal the place where the head and the torso overlap then it’s ok to do the head as a separate object. If not, it’s not such a good idea, as it’s very difficult to cover up seams between meshes.

Also, you haven’t extruded anything for the ears. Use the E key to extrude. You just pulled the vertices. That’s bad. The topology should flow with the shapes, not work against them. You also seem to have this gaping hole in topology in the front of the neck. You’ll have a very uneven mesh to sculpt on and texture later.

Ok, here is my second attempt. I created a UV sphere (head), extruded the ears and sculpted a way at it a bit. Then I created a second UV sphere (body).

They both had the same number of faces so I cut a hole out of the bottom of the head and out of the top of the body and connected them.

This is what I have so far. Also I do eventually plan on adding clothing.

Ok, after googling and going through tutorials and such I’ve moved onto plane modeling. I find it works better for me since I’m not going by any references.

So, after looking at a topology reference video I learned a bit about how having 5 edges connected to 1 vertex is good where there could be possible facial expressions. Such as by the eyes, lips etc. I was wondering if I do have mine in good spots?

The middle picture depicts where 5 edges will be connecting to 1 vertex… except the two on the right, only one of those two will end up with 5, the other with 4 (I think).

The far right picture shows roughly where I want another 5 to form.

The far left picture is just showing the curvature of the model so far.

Aside from that I would like to know others opinions on whether my model is starting to look feminine or not. I’m not familiar with anatomy that much but when I think of a female face I think rounder (less rigid) but besides that I’m not really sure what to aim for to make it really feminine. The nose seems to be a little long… still trying to figure out how to do the nose… and how to perfect the tear duct…

Box-modelling is n entirely valid technique, especially for creating base meshes for sculpting. Plane modelling is more time-consuming by comparison. But it’s a fine first attempt. It’s difficult to judge whether it’s feminine or masculine at this early stage :).

You should take the nose and the naso-labial fold into account in your topology.
