Fog and mist

How do I make fog or mist in blender?

it depends. what version are you using? 2.49, or 2.5?

using 2.49

so, describe the scene a bit. do you want a layer of mist on the ground, or do you want everything to sort of fade back into a mist?

Usually, I do “fog and mist” in much the same way that I do depth-of-field and so on: with compositing, using “z-depth” information.

Fog really does two things:

  • As objects recede into the fog, they become more indistinct. That is to say, the Alpha value declines with distance.
  • As the objects recede, they also tend to become (say) “more bluish.” There is, in other words, a color-blend toward some suitable color, that increases with distance.

There may be additional effects … a true “flowing mist” … that may be superimposed in front of everything else.

When you break-down the effect in this way, you can probably visualize a compositing “noodle” that would achieve and then combine each of these sub-effects.

a good way to do an overall mist using the mist settings in the world buttons, is, first, check the online manual for how to set up your camera for mist, then, disable mist temporarily and take a render of your scene. take that render into gimp or photoshop, and turn down the saturation, and change the levels, so it looks like it’s all covered in fog. then take that back into blender, and set is as a texture for your world. set to ‘paper’ so you just see the straight render as your background. now enable mist. this will give a very convincing fog effect.

here’s a little example
