Four Procedural Lemons

Hi everyone!

I’m glad to be here sharing another work of mine.

The subject today is: Lemons! Very suitable for these hot days of Summer…

The hardest thing, for me, has been creating the texture. I told myself to create it in a pure procedural way, which was a complex challenge, for me. Me, a complete dumb a few months ago about procedural textures and Blender node system. Literally: I was on panic only to think I had to face them.

Now I’m beginning to see the posibilities, the almost infinite posibilities, to create textures just with the procedural way (and saving RAM memory, BTW).

Here you have my node tree. You can use it for your own works. Of course, you can even improve it. I would be glad to see results.

Only in the greenish color I used a texture map, because I wanted a total precision to put the green stains in the lemons. So I had to paint them manually.

Everything as usual in my workflow: Blender-a bit of ZBrush-Cycles

Here you can see a simple clay render, too:

Enjoy!!!

Health and Love for everyone!!!

Very impressive!

Excellent! Those lemons look so real, so sour…

I like to make my own procedural textures inside of Blender when I can, as well. The Noise texture is my all-time favorite!

Thanks for sharing.
Pretty realistic result.

That’s good but I find it too blurry. If you want, try to check the dimensins of the object and then increase the aperture of the camera diphgragm or/and take a lower focal length. Otherwise It’s good.

Thank you all, Neon, wolverine, Timur and Sol!

I’m glad that you like it.

Wolverine: I’m starting to really LOVE procedural texturing in Blender. I think it worths every minute you spend watching tutorials or reading about them. They can take you further, no doubt. And I love noise, texture, as well. In fact, it’s one of my most used textures

Timur: Everything I have learned is because of sites like this. That’s why I think sharing is necessary, somehow. I hope it helps

Sol_33: Thank you so much for your critical review. I agree that maybe it’s too blurry, but I wanted to render it even blurrier, in the beginning  I LOVE the out of focus effect. It gives some mystery to images and even some extra heat. In fact, the default Gaussian blur of the camera has been increased from 1,50 to 2,20. It gives, as well, a pictorials look to image. It allows me to focus in lighting and color, more than texture. Maybe because that way I can hide the lacks of my procedural shader. It’s good enough but for me it’s very difficult to achieve a ultra detailed lemon skin.

So maybe that was the very reason

Health and Love for everyone. Happy blending!!!

Looks really good.

Thank you fdffxd! Glad that you like it!

I do enjoy all your work Mr. Chaun for it’s simplicity and elegance. A rare combination with excellent modeling.

Thank you, Elsdon, for your kind words. They encourage me to keep working and researching. Thank you again!

The number of lemons in the title and the image are a nice wordplay. Reminds me a little bit of what Magritte did with his titles.

The image itself is a very lovely still study.

My two cents would be more samples (I guess you used volumetrics here) and a little bit stronger key light.

But nevertheless the result is wonderful.

Thank you, Minoribus, for your comment. Yes, I agree that more samples would be nice. But, believe or not, one thing that I always do is, in postproduction, adding some noise in Photoshop. I think noise gives a little bit more naturalism to the image. So, no matter if I have a cleaner image… at the end I always add some noise

I love Magritte!!! And your guessing is right

Thank you again for your tips and nice words.

Happy blending!!!

Nice texturing a render. Simply but great work

Thank you Fabianbz!

Very good and thanks for the node setup, I’m really glad for every example to learn from.

Thank you marekv. I can tell you the same. This is a great community to learn from, isn’t it? Everything I have learned from Blender is thanks to people who share their knowledge.

Have a nice day!

I copied your node setup but at the end the skin of my lemon is very smooth and modifying the bump strength and the distance gives no results. Perhaps is a texture missing between the texture coordinate node and the add node? In attachment I send the .blend file to show the mistake I am making. Please help.
Thanks in advancelemon.blend (594.5 KB)

To get something alike?

Start by setting gamma to 1…

I would like to create a bump texture like the one in the attached image which is a photograph of a portion of a lemon skin, but I have no idea how to do it. Setting gamma to 1 does not change anything in the surface of my lemon.

Sorry for the gamma: I could not see the bumps because my sun lamp had a too high value. Anyhow the texture I would like to create is like the image I have sent.
