::FPS/Puzzle (Major Update 3!)::

Yes i know what you’re thinking…

I once heard that you should work on something you like or else you’re never going to finish a project, so I have started a FPS/Puzzle game project with a few of my friends. We’re working out the storyline but dont expect it to be too impressive. So far, here are the team members:

Erik Benitez - Art Director/Level Design Lead
Chad Williams - Music creation and Sound Effects
? - Programmer

I’m almost done with the design of the first level. The game will basically consist of killing enemies, and solving simple puzzles to make your way though to the end. I didnt want this to be the typical FPS where your only objective is kill kill kill.

Please note that the gun in the game was not created by me and neither was the mouselook setup. I took this from another example file to navigate my level. The example file was created by Martinsh. The level itself was created by me.

Here are some screenshots:

I’m not entirely sure if this will become a finished project or not but it looks pretty good so far in my opinion. At least for the early stage its in. What do you guys think of the first level?

Update 1:
- I will be switching to a new mouselook setup that has been last modified by Social.

  • I will also be working on a new (completely original) gun that works better with the theme of the level.
  • Chad has created a theme song for the game which can be downloaded here. This song will be the song that plays at the title menu screen.

Update 2:
- I’ve successfully made the switch to Social’s setup.

  • Plasma Gun and Plasma have been modeled.
  • Skybox has been fixed.

Here are some screens of the new gun:

And here’s a screenshot of the gun in action:

Update 3:

Okay, this is a major update! I’ve created a low poly version of a weapon i made a while back, and a new level. I’ve switched to Social’s FPS Template and have implemented the latest weapon.

New Weapon:

New Map:

Hope you like the update = ) BIG THANKS to Social for his holiday gift to the BGE community. There will be more to come soon. Next thing you will see is probably going to be some graphics for the menu system.

looks great!

7 fps?
Is that just because it isn’t complete? I’ve no knowledge of the Game Editor, but I know enough to say that 7 fps won’t make for very smooth gameplay.

Great! Please do finish this, it looks really good.

7 FPS???

It might be your computers fault that you’re getting 7 fps…

If you want to, You can PM me the .blend file and ill test it on my machine

BTW, looks very nice.

yeah the 7 fps is due to my crappy computer, it actually runs at around 80 fps on my mom’s laptop. The computer im working on currently has no graphics card and is running through on-board memory.

Thanks for the comments, you’ll hear/see more soon = )

yes, for games i use my moms laptop for blender games. not my crappy pc. it looks really
cool and semi-professional. i’d love to see a video or demo soon!

Woeh :open_mouth:

No graphic card? No wonder it’s running so slow lol.

Back on topic: Can’t wait for a demo!!

looks cool

I can help u with some of the simple objects if u want a secondary modeler.

That’s looking amazing so far:D
Admittedly, when I read the title I was expecting something like “Hi, I’ve been using Blender for 2 minutes and want to make a photorealistic FPS! I’ve got a great story!!! Any ideas?!? Oh, and it’ll be online so hundreds of people can play each other at once, and it’ll have the best physics ever seen!!!”
:stuck_out_tongue:
But that’s actually looking very good:), I especially like the explosion effects:cool:
Good luck, I hope you do finish this:D

I don’t like the name, kinda cheezy IMO. The gun (and I suspect the rest of the setup) was originally used in this demo:

http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=79829

I hope you guys have the original creators permission to use this. I mean I’m sure he would let you use the mouselook and movement setup, but I think the gun mesh might be a no-no.

I like the level (since that’s pretty much what you did here). It reminds me of those “Hell” levels from UT2003.

I also like the fact that you have a few people on the team already.

Good luck with this.

*Edit

I noticed some minor seams in your skybox from the first picture. Remember, you can always use my tutorial to get a seamless skybox. I believe it’s listed in the sticky now. So, just in case if you forgot/don’t know about it, it’s there for your use.

silicon knights made a game called eternal darkness. Just sooos ya knows. It was a survival horror style game I think. The pics look great. And yeah what social said you need to get in touch with the creator of the gun and the barrel go boom demo.

It looks like he was using it for a project

The title of the game will definately not be “Eternal Darkness” I just put that there as a temp title for now. In fact, i took the title from one of my earlier wallpapers i did before located here. The gun in the screenshots will also not be in the final game. I only used the demo file to navigate the level. I will have Doug (the programmer in the team) write an original mouselook script and i will model another gun that fits the theme better. Thanks for all the support. I will post an update in a few hours = )

Well, you could have him waste his time on that, but if I may suggest going with a modification of an already established mouselook script.

The best performing mouselook script to date would be the one used in the walkthrough template IMHO (that, or the one by z3r0_d). Unfortunatelly, the original version of the walkthrough template doesn’t work all that well with the bullet engine due to some recent bugs, but I made a mod recently that is bullet compatible:

http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=80406

It should be easy to set up a very decent FPS scheme around that, instead of having your programmer write something needlesly from scratch.

Of course, it’s just a suggestion.

Social:
Thanks a lot social! I think i’ll switch to your setup for now, it works quite nicely. I’ll have to fix the skybox too, thanks again for the tutorial = )

Update:
My sound guy (Chad) has composed a theme song for the game. He titled the song “Revenge” and i will post a link to the song on the first post. New screenshots with the new gun and Social’s setup to come soon = )

You got a very good audio guy there. I like it so far, seems HL2 inspired, so it’s good in my book.

This project just jumped a few steps up in my “serious” list. I’ll be keeping an eye on this one.

Keep up the good work, and if your programmer needs any help with my walkthrough setup, I’m a PM away.

the song is very cool

Niccccceeeeeeee. Kind o’ like doing a hot teacher. I love south park. Back to topic. Social you definiately played too much HL2. Ok back to topic. Niccccccceeeeee

Unfortunately, Doug is too busy to join my team so im short a programmer. I’ve been studying Social’s file and im figuring out how it works bit by bit so it will be a few days before the next update. I’m thinking about opening that programmer spot to anyone who’s interested and has some work they can show me to prove that they can really code. For now, i guess im the programmer sorta (though i know very little about the BGE API)

= )
