I stumbled across this site the other day. I thought that some blender users could use it. PLEASE read all the information on the web site. I don’t want to be responsible for a tragedy here. It seems like you can get a free domain name (I think there’s a small advertisement for compensation) for one year and 5 years if you’re a student. This is the closest thing to finding a free domain I’ve ever come across. Of course, domains are pretty cheap, but for those ultra poor people, this seems to be a good temporary solution. Make sure you cancel before your free year is up!
Please also don’t hammer the site and try to manipulate the system. This is here to help us, don’t abuse it.
