is there a program out there that’s free, that can take a texture and turn it into a normal map? Cheers!

the normal map plugin for Gimp is ace. I think it’s available for both Windows and Linux.
Try xNormal. I haven’t had a chance to try it out myself, because the download is too big for my dial-up, but I hear it is pretty good up against Crazy Bump and other commercial programs.
