I’ve given up on the WIP section for now because I just can’t seem to get any real help there. I want people who can not just say I don’t like this or that, but why and what methods they would use to change it.
I would love to get some real input from people who love to create art. Make some changes and learn something. Part of what makes me not such an idiot is learning. (well sometimes %| ) So I’m posting this here in the hopes that people will want to take two minutes to really talk about where this should go.
Thanks in advance to all that help …
PS… sorry for the rant. I really would like honest help.
mat settings… the nor map looks a bit well… could use some more work… for example the forehead - the wrinkles could fade into the skin farther out on the head… a creepy lil dude like this might also want more texture to his skin…
I’d google up some wrinkly old skin references, tree bark any organic matter you’d think would fit and patch together a more detailed nor map.
I think I see veins… maybe make them show a little more, and I’d add some blotchyness to the skin…If you have him uv mapped or if your good at texturing landis style I’d imagine this fellows skin could use some dirt and detail in his wrinkles crevices and cracks
I like to model my chars with the arms, legs, and fingers in a half bent pose… for better deformations after rigging (so they don’t tend to look like noodles of a sort) yes skilled weight painting might help, but I think it makes a lot less work sometimes I do model straight then bend right before rigging.
oh… and maybe give him a hat, or scarf or a tattoo (heart w/ mom) or some sort of prop (a big spoon) … ya know just somthing extra to give him more character.
I do think it’s good work just your asking for input on where this might go.
good luck
edit… another look at the model, I’d just push verts around and sharpen edges to define- his pelvis where legs start, his belly maybe lift and round it a lil… more pot belly style -more defined chest and butt, maybe angle his neck forward a bit… just more suggestions
HatchFactry: Thanks for the advice on rigging. It would actually help to define the elbows to have them benta a little
As for materials. Yes, I have him pretty well mapped right now. (it was a bit of work in itself) Funny that you mention it. I am trying my hand at creating some brushes just for NOR wrinkles. The rougher texture might be a pretty good thought. I’ll have to experiment a little with that to make sure that it doesn’t detract from the shape.
I did kind of put a slight crease in the mesh to try to define the hip region, thinking that would create the belly/legs/butt seperation. Although I think it is obvious that it needs a bit more to get it right. Perhaps some celulite wrinkes.
I like the idea of a prop. I thought about giving him a teddy bear, but I am going to have to keep the verts down so we’ll see. After you saying something I will definately have to do something…
Ok… a little work on the face and head. Also color. I will have to do the mouth later in Gimp because the MHSSS script only works on whole meshes, not materials within meshes.
Also the teeth need work. I am working on getting the nails proper, and then I’ll put up a full shot again.
the wrinkles in the forehead look better, and I see you’ve bent the elbows slightly, (you’ll be glad you did later).
I think I liked him orange better… or maybe a color inbetween the previous and the update. The veins look better but might look better more random (less visable in more places where the skin is thicker.
I like the ears but they ought to (maybe) be more visable… rotated ever so slightly on the z axis, like a humans (so he dosen’t look like he has antanae from the front view)
I’m not sure about the color. I did it because I wanted to get some more contrast for the shading in the textures. Strong textures seem to wash him out, so I was looking for a way to get the wrinkle shadows to stand out more.
Part of this is set to, and I need to encorparate that in. I’m woriking on it now, so give like a day or two…
