Working on setting up a scene for a short NPR animation involving my froggos from my previous post:

> [@Froggos being froggos | Project breakdown](https://blenderartists.org/t/froggos-being-froggos-project-breakdown/1650258):
>
> For all the frog lovers (myself included) Made this for last weeks render challenge with the theme “A place to call home” Here is a little breakdown regarding some of the things that I found the most interesting to work on (or I guess find shortcuts for) The back legs Since I had no plans to extend the back legs for the render I decided to just simply extrude, scale and rotate faces with a cube as the base to create the leg …

Currently working on the river setup (breakdown below)!

 ![image](https://blenderartists.org/uploads/default/original/4X/e/5/8/e5876e7eddb1d18d005e49225ae8e85356cced7e.png)

**The material:**

 ![image](https://blenderartists.org/uploads/default/original/4X/a/a/b/aabbde53843f7a8519cf2e824ac877b1fddbeeb6.png)

The “flow” parameter is generated with a geometry nodes setup which is also responsible for slightly deforming the river mesh to give the illusion of a calm flow along the U-coordinate.
In the material I use the flow attribute to add some minor ripples with a noise texture and a bump node

The volume is there to give a sense of depth. It’s a minor detail but I just really like how it looks

 ![without_volume](https://blenderartists.org/uploads/default/original/4X/0/6/d/06d2a2eaeba38327e0f111ac048009aec4099686.jpeg)
 ![with_volume](https://blenderartists.org/uploads/default/original/4X/e/e/a/eeab197e420eb9c22c700601114ee45b033cf624.jpeg)

**The geometry nodes setup:**

To make the illusion of a flow that goes from wide → narrow → wide I just unwrapped it from top view, made it cover the whole UV space and adjusted some of the point coordinates to create a bending/pinching “push” in the direction of the flow

A few assets made for the scene!

_Grass/Shrubbery_

I wanted a pretty stylized geometric look for shrubs so I made 3 simple geometric shapes as my starting point

 ![image](https://blenderartists.org/uploads/default/original/4X/8/1/b/81b486cd657518d516d0f436e0a42130bf5a8fdc.png)

I then made a very simple geometry nodes setup that instantiates the shapes on points, and just offsets, scales and rotates the instances randomly

 ![image](https://blenderartists.org/uploads/default/original/4X/7/b/7/7b7180fdd405fb77fafcdffd863f40ae5e7f2774.png)

_Tall grass_

 ![image](https://blenderartists.org/uploads/default/original/4X/2/6/6/2662a3616f959e0a9713e99408ee0dd29f4552d9.png)

I wanted to keep the tall grass next to the rocks fairly simple as well, so my solution was to distribute points on a surface, instantiate curve lines on the points and resample them to about 10 or so points.
That way I could get some very nice and sharp shapes along the curve by adding tilt along the spline factor before generating the mesh with a curve line as the profile shape

The overall shape/tapering was done with a float curve node that looked like this in the end

 ![image](https://blenderartists.org/uploads/default/original/4X/7/b/7/7b7f8e5a734f31290863b94e251d8e5259610bfb.png)

_Background grass_

 ![image](https://blenderartists.org/uploads/default/original/4X/e/7/9/e79b5f6bc8053db2d3acff2a09ad08e8b7000081.png)

For the grass in the background I did the same thing but I decreased the amount of tilt to only rotate about 180 degrees from bottom to top

The float curve shape is also a bit different

 ![image](https://blenderartists.org/uploads/default/original/4X/2/5/e/25e66605088ecfbb35fa7b3fc5ca97f76793b555.png)

</div>

I also made a geometry nodes setup that takes a collection and creates an outline effect around the objects in the collection

 ![image](https://blenderartists.org/uploads/default/original/4X/2/9/5/2950142dd14c7cbfeb92b3e0d2a90c3be8ba058c.png)
 ![image](https://blenderartists.org/uploads/default/original/4X/d/f/1/df1d47893c6c55c855ca0298f4a1b1e1335d7d17.png)

 ![image](https://blenderartists.org/uploads/default/original/4X/4/2/8/4282e598dde1f16a935eb350aac5dd4a7f45e9b8.png)

Doing it this way allowed me to easily change settings for multiple things at the same time, and if necessary I could disable all the outlines by disabling one modifier instead of one on each individual object

Each collection can also have it’s own material (as with the frogs)
