Funny shading..whats happening here?

As you can hopefullysee, there’s some odd shading going on here, the only curves present are on the corners of the closest edge. However the cassette does not look like a cuboid, as you would expect, rather the edges seem to have been smoothed out.

Any ideas why this may have happened?

You have probably hit ‘set smooth’. Try hitting ‘set solid’ and see if that helps. Also, you may want to ctrl-n to recalculate the normals (sometimes these artifacts can be created by misdirected normals).

Yeah, just tried reverting back to ‘solid’ (funny, I’ve reverted back to solid in other recreational activities too…;)) and that’s done it. Shame tho - am I now not gonna have smooth corners?

Also the white spool inside looks wrong because the flat spokes have been smoothed, but with it turned off the cylinder itself is then not round. Am I gonna have to split it up into bits (and how do I do that?) or start again. And what happens if I join an object set to smooth, with one set to solid?

you can put smooth back on but also turn on autosmooth, this will enable it to decide which faces need smoothing and which to be solid depending on the angle relationship between them, this angle can also be adjusted if necessary by altering the degr amount under the autosmooth button.

Excellent, that’s how I assumed it worked in the first place, and where my confusion arose.

Ta for the help guys!
