Game Engines for modding . . .

Hello all!

I’ve asked about this in various places, with no useful answer, so I’ll try my luck here.

Basically I’ve got an idea for a game mod, but haven’t got a clue as to the state of play regarding engines/tools etc. (I’m even considering Blitz from scratch!) The things I need

  • Custom maps/characters/weapons/everything
  • Third person
  • Multiplayer network support
  • Scripting
  • On screen radar (if possible)

Basically it’s a third person melee game with a couple of twists.

Any ideas I would love to hear, and any useful links you might have. I’d love to do it in Blender, but it lacks the networking! (CURSES!!!)

Cheers

kt

I would suggest half life 2 (18 more days), but for most any you will need to program at least something

Programming doesn’t bother me, but needlessly reinventing the wheel does. (My big issue would be character animation in Blitz). I’d considered HL2, but since practically no one’s going to be able to run it . . .

I’m certainly leaning towards Unreal Tournament, Q3A or HL1. The websites on the subject are utterly useless though.

You sure? From what I’ve heard the minimum requirements (to get 40fps and reasonable physics, but graphics that aren’t that great) is a tnt2 and a pIII 733.

The tnt2 is OLD, if anyone plays games a lot they have at least a geforce.

(just because the half life 2 engine can stress directX 9 cards doesn’t mean it doesn’t give up detail for speed [except in the benchmarks])

quake engines’ are open …also crystalspace, ogre, ark and similar  …search sourceforge.net for game engines :stuck_out_tongue:

yeah…

crystalspace is really worth learning. that is one kick ass engine.

I’m using it to develop once:

kttp://once.sourceforge.net

yup, CS (=crystalspace) is a great engine AFAIK.

looked up your page:

  1. seems lika a nice project …good luck with it!!
  2. the URL is wrong …the protocol is http (not kttp) %|

yeah… sorry about that… my typing isn’t too hot
