Geonodes modeling

image

I wonder if its relatively easy to make some BASIC operations on mesh in geonodes ( example screenshots )
basically, selectively extrude/bevel different parts of a mesh, cylinder , in my example .

Yes.

Hope that helps.

What’s the point of your answer

Its a very open question, with no hint of what you have tried or what yr usecase is.

There is a million ways to do what you want, here’s one.

Bevel based on length of z vector.

Another one…

another way with a vertex group, and object brought in…

Any of these what you want?

Hello,

GN can do many things and among that procedural modeling, but it requires to think procedural / parametric… What I mean by that is while you can make some shape similar to yours the method is likely to be very different from regular modeling…

My advice is rather than trying to learn it with a specific goal which might not be the best / simplest learning exercise, try to do some tutorials and learn basic functionalities, just to get a feel of the tool…
Then ask yourself if working like that is something that you like and if you are ok with spending months to practice and learn…
Then you’ll get a good understanding of what is easy to do with it and how to do it…

In any case GN is super useful for many stuff like scattering, grooming, particles… The thing with procedural modeling is that unlike the other tasks you can always do something the regular way and it’s likely to be faster…
So while procedural modeling can always be useful for some application it’s likely to stay a niche use case, so maybe it’s better to look into scattering or else first

Have fun !

i provided 2 screenshots of what im trying to ahcieve in gn
i tried to use gradient and set position, but failed to remap gradient to be 0-1-0 instead of 0-1, i have no idead why it doesnt work

i use geonodes quite a lot, and i have some ‘stupid ideas’ on how to achieve the shape on first screenshot, however i dont think its the right way, so i asked it here

i tried to replicate this setup in geonodes

And i assume im doing something wrong, trying to copy this in GN, because i cant remap it with color ramp/Float curve

Thanks, this is nice actually, thats what im looking as for bevel.

Ok ! Thanks for providing more information !

Sorry if my previous comment sounded condescending as it was pretty unclear to me how much familiar you were with GN !

From my experience I rarely feel that I got the right way of doing something in GN, especially when it comes to things like these…
Most of the time I’ve got the impression that I’m just using a clever hack that works for that particular case… so as long as it works…
Generally I got the impression that there isn’t a right way but rather a bunch of wrong ways… Each ones comes with their own constraints so sometimes you need to pick another approach to get more control, or to apply it to more cases and so on…

i thought of using boolean to make this, or using cylinders with diferent radius to make this hole and merge them, its not just wrong, but it also comes with many problems

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
