This is my first attempt at a male character, which is odd enough, but it did require a little rejuggling of what I thought I knew about sculpting characters. It took a few attempts to get something I was happy with, but in the end, I think I’ve ended up with a decent enough likeness.
I learned a ton for my next project, anyway…whatever it may be.
All done in Blender, with the exception of the skin texturing which was done in substance.

I think some of your crevices went a little deep, but I think he’s still mostly recognizable.
I can definitely relate to the difficulties you had with this. Male characters are hard when you’re used to focusing on female characters (and vice versa for artists who favor male subjects). They don’t seem like they should be, because we’re all human (or mostly human in Geralt’s case) and really aren’t that different when you get down to it, but maybe that’s what makes it hard? Trying to make it different enough that they look look like the intended gender without too much of what you’d do to make them look like your usual subject, but not going so far the other way they look caricature-like or unnatural and inhuman.
And of course trying to do a likeness makes everything 10X harder. Doesn’t just need to look like “a guy” but exactly like “this guy.”
Yeah for sure. I definitely found that there was a very fine line between something being over defined, and under, and I kinda struggled with that, especially with some of the smaller details, like forehead creases, and the wrinkles around the eyes, which took five or six attempts to get right. With female characters though, often everything is very understated, which simplifies things, but can also be a pain when doing a likeness, as it can be harder to see forms - so in that sense, it was kinda helpful, and I kinda enjoyed it for the most part.
I’ve not actually looked at him since I posted it, and with fresher eyes, I’m actually a lot happier than I was the day after I finished it. I still think something’s ‘off’ but even now, I’m not entirely sure what.
