Getting a "texture" tab up in F6

I have a question about a tutorial that I’m following over at blender3dclub, which is this one:
http://www.blender3dclub.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=51

My problem arises when I press F6 to create the textures. While the screen grab in the tutorial displays a texture tab with the MAT button activated, I don’t get that texture tab. I can get a texture tab if I press the WORLD button, but not the MAT button.

At first I thought it was because I was using a newer version of blender (2.47), so I installed the 2.45 version that the tutorial is based on, but I got the same result.

So how to do get a texture tab up with the MAT button active? Needless to say, I’m new at blender, and stuff like this confuses me. Thanks for any help with this.

Well, first step is to create a material:
F5 - Links and Pipeline Panel - Add New
Then create a texture:
F6 - Texture Panel - Add new ( you can add some others )
Bye

Thanks. That step was not outlined in the tutorial, although the author finally replied to my query stating as such.

Well, unfortunately there must be a few other details missing, because I followed this tutorial and wound up with this:

Obviously I’m not understanding something here. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Looking at the tutorial it looks like you need to UV unwrap your mesh.

And press the “Set Smooth” button, maybe?!
