Getting bored...

Alright. I’m a hacker in the way I like to experiment with computers and OSs for the sake of “fun”. It’s a hobby. I need something new to play with, I’m getting board with the following that I’ve tried:

Windows of all flavors, 1.0 to 2003.

Linux, debian, rpm-based, source based, livecd etc.

BSD, never used any of the main distros but it’s probably a lot like Linux, esp gentoo with it’s portage.

QNX, not much to see really, interesting kernel

BeOS, phos, dan0, r5 PE, Max, dev ed etc, best os ever but it’s dying

Mac OS 7 under basliiskII, was fun but nothing underneath to play with.

MenuetOS, not much to play with and learn.

If anyone wants to list some others that I can download and play with for free that’d be great! I’d like to try amiga but the ROMs are illegal to download and it’s still in production.

Thanks!

How about the x86 version of darwin?

I’d like to try amiga but the ROMs are illegal to download

pffft, why the hell do people get so hung up about this ‘illegal’ thing? Look, when it comes to software and only you are downloading it for your personal use to no profit then what harm is it to anyone?

Seriously amiga roms is hardly living on the edge.

Anyways, ‘illegal’ stuff is to be done but never spoken about [/shifty eyes].

I don’t have a problem with abandonware. But Since amiga is still making money off amiga I don’t want to do it. Older ones I can understand.

It doesn’t really say what comes in the 7.0 version of Darwin, what is it good for? Does it differ from other BSDs enough to be an “exploration”?

Anything else?

How about hOp? http://www.macs.hw.ac.uk/~sebc/hOp/ It’s very very young but interesting to to see. It’s a Haskell micro-kernel based OS.

Have you seen Open Croquet? www.opencroquet.org As far as their devotion to GPL software remaining GPL software once it becomes profitable I wouldn’t trust them, but the concept of producing something that reminds me of the cyberspace from W. Gibson’s Neuromancer is worth a look. It runs on a Linux kernel apparently. Twin this with a grid like kernel, like say Open Mosix mkII and you might have a very interesting environment.

Looking Glass 3D? Nice idea, shame about the speed. (2GHz for a decent speed, oh dear oh dear)

Ben

Solaris is being released… soon …

hmmmm

well you could try somthing that will override all other things in your life.

GF 1.0 is a great way to do this.

Alltaken

ReactOS? Or maybe its too familiar to you since it emulates Windows? www.reactos.com

If you’re interrest to go back in the 80’s, you can get a copy of free-dos

http://www.freedos.org/

Geos with C64-Emu…
And Amiga of course, ever tried Amiga-In-a-Box?

D.

Maybe you’d like to check out the open BeOS project:

http://www.haiku-os.org/learn.php

y’know since it’s the “best os ever”. Some people just don’t want to let go.

How about this one: your favourite editor on top of your favourite OS:
http://www.informatimago.com/linux/emacs-on-user-mode-linux.html

How about you make you own?
Eh? EH?
:stuck_out_tongue:

Hey… good to see a hacker who uses the term in the right sense.

I’d suggest installing Gentoo, if you haven’t tried that already.
I’d also suggest you learn the emacs operating system. I use it, it’s great

hehe, I’ve got my eye on one. That’s about it >.>

I’d suggest installing Gentoo, if you haven’t tried that already.

Couldn’t stand the nastyness and “must-conform” feeling of all the binary based distros, I switched to gentoo about 6 monthes ago and it rocks!

(for the record I don’t code so I don’t like calling myself a hacker, it doesn’t quite feel koesher. but really no one can call themselves by that title anyway  )

AmigaInABox Sounds quite interesting, looking at that now.

I’ve installed and played with looking glass before, interesting stuff.

I’m also thinking of taking up Bash scripting so I can worm my way up to Python then C/C++, get some experiance there and maybe that’ll help me understand math a little more, a very weak point for me.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

Atheos?
Dont’ know what is it, were it is, and if it is still alive, but it should be free sofware, i read about this operating system one or two years ago, on a Linux magazine… Should not be a Linux distro.

Darn you valar, I was going to post that!

Go here for details on how (warning: it’s terribly hard):

LOL And here I was thinking it was easy.

:o what about an OS with kernel in C, but all other tools/commands in Python or Forth? There is such an OS in Perl, but I only know m$ windows, so I donno how to run it on bochs/vpc.

BTW: More often, Forth itself is considered to be an OS. If you want to have a look at Forth, I recommend:

If you like, you can use the google tool to translate my article on Forth from Simplified Chinese to English

You should never call yourself a hacker (def. l33t programmer) unless you are one. You might just annoy a real hacker who could easily take down your system just for fun. There are very many people who can rightly call themselves hackers.

Start with Python not Bash. Bash syntax is complicated sometimes. Python is much easier and more extensible. Neither will help you with Math much more than a calculator.

A real hacker wouldn’t take someone’s system down for fun. That just sounds like a depraved little 13 year old screwing with his mom’s computer in a basement. Hackers have ethics.
