Getting Started with Game Characters?

How do you get started modelling games characters, like those you would use to export to CrystalSpace or Ogre3d? (I already know how to model and animate something, so please don’t give me any of those tutorials, thank you.) Can you put multiple materials on your object, or would it have to be Shadeless with a UV map? What about Toon Shading, how would you use that in a game?
I’m a n00b to this stuff, so any answers would be nice!

you model them like anything else

except with a lower polyon budget… like 2000 polys or so… [depends on a bunch of things what the actual number might be]

toon shading: no, you’d have to have a special shader for ogre for that

you’d just have a model with a texture applied via uv mapping… I don’t belive the exporters notice textures applied with reflection mapping chosen [not that they couldn’t, it would be a different shader]…

In the OGRE downloads forum there is a viewer program. It’s not the best, but it can give you an idea of how your model would look in OGRE.
