Gimp 2.4 release candidate one was released:
Great news!!! Last development release was awesome. I like mainly new brush functionalities.
Thank you for this
How good is Gimp for texturing?
It’s really good -check out @ndy’s works.
I use photoshop for anything that’s going to CMYK, but initially I do stuff in gimp. Cool stuff.:eyebrowlift:
I can believe how long this took them!!
but here is the windows build:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=121075&package_id=240554&release_id=532945
they would sure get a lot more feedback if they would release a windows version from the beginning !
Oh well,
I am just happy to get it
Here here - thx for the windows build link.
Hello Everyone,
Just a quick note - When I tried the GIMP RC1, I found that it did not recognize my wacom tablet. I couldn’t even get to the “Configure Extended Input Devices” dialog in preferences. In previous versions I was able to do this with no problem.
I was able to fix it by changing the target in the shortcut to:
“C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.4\bin\gimp-2.4.exe” ignore wintab
The next time you start GIMP, you will get a couple of errors, but you will be able to get to the “Configure Extended Input Devices” dialog. Once there, just use the defaults and save the preferences. Next, modify the target of the shortcut again and remove “ignore wintab”. Now when you start GIMP there will not be any errors, and your tablet should be working fine.
Best of Luck!!!
That rocks OBI_Ron, just tried it and it works like a dream!
Thank you!
Works well, but I am hoping that the windows system can get an update, keep all the tools and windows within one working space… too used to working with blenders work flow, it really does spoil you after a while.
No ideas on CYMK development for this? I know Inkscape has it implemented, maybe still on the drawing board.
But this works great, I am a photoshop user, but I think I will add this to my tool box as well.!

Gimp was designed for a superior Linux windows manager… You can do the same stuff in windows if you use Black box. (mainly the remember my position feature, and the always on top feature
I myself hope gimp keeps the Multi window layout, I love being able to have different parts of my projects on different workspaces. and I personally really dont like Paintshop pro, or Abobe photo shop window lay out.
For additional color spaces, Gimp will use an external library, GEGL, wich is now still in early developement.
Promising, but no ETA.
It works fine so far - just the printer module crashes so i had to use MS-Paint for printing. Hopply someone had explained it in detail to the programmers. And nice to have now some tool for lens distortion correction. But where is that tool for color correction with examples of changes gone?

Could you share some more information about this Black box? I found this site: http://www.bb4win.org/news.php but I don’t really know what to download and how to set this up. If I understood you correctly, one of the things black box does is put all the gimp windows under one bar in the taskbar? This would be really helpful for my workflow if possible.
hello Lamont,
you can try blackbox by going to http://bb4win.sourceforge.net/bblean/
and download it. Unzip it and click on “blackbox” which will temporary replace the windows XP explorer shell.
After rebooting, xp will run with the standard explorer shell again.
If you like it, you can make blackbox the default window manager but I’d suggest you do a bit of reading on that page
As far as running GIMP goes, the windows are still separate (as on xp) but if that’s a concern, you can always try “gimpshop” which let’s you use gimp “almost” like photoshop.
Hi Lamoot!
I use BBlean… there are a few flavours of black box for windows… xoblite is an other of my favorites
it is a bit complicated to set up… but when you do it is very rewarding.
If you dont want to go thru all that stuff, here is an easyer way to get some of linux window manager features in windows…
Winroll makes your windows Transprent like in Vista or in linux…
It also allows you to make certain windows always stay on top .(Middle click, or right click on the close window “X” to make it always stay on top)
If you right click on the title bar, it will roll them up too, In linux we call it Shading… very nice if you want to access things under a window, with out minimizing.
Wish it had multiple workspaces… you would need Microsoft power toys, or Virtuawin for that tho…
I just ran BBlean and after 5 minutes playing with it it feels different, but better. If anything it seems to work faster. And I’ve also been able to solve the problem multiple gimp windows were causing. Before I was making textures in gimp while at the same time have blender opened to see how the texture turns out. It was annoying to have to click on three window tabs just to have all of the gimp to be visible again.
Now I simply open blender in “alpha” and gimp in “beta” and switch between the two, works like a charm (not to mention there are still “gamma” and “delta” left for other windows). Now I can enjoy a more efficient and productive workflow with open source tools.
I’m definitelly keeping this one (unless I find a better one that is :))
Thank you both for your help
I agree.
This is what’s happening at the Gimp camp. They’re going through a GUI redesign for 2.6, and they’re talking about having an optional SDI. It is recognized that the user will lose a giant amount of screen space (i.e. Photoshop) when this option is on. But a lot of people want it because they’re used to it that way.
The thing that’s really interesting to me is that there’s talk of having even smaller, semi-transparent tool boxes! So for single monitor users, they can use their full monitor for image editing. The tool boxes of course would become opaque when being used. How cool is that?
Oh yeah, if any of you experience the print dialog box crashing on RC1, it has been patched. RC2 should be out any day now.
ah good news about printer issue. just now i have to see how to use camera distortion dialog.
