It looks like things are finally starting to come together for the old Gimp, has anyone tried this version, which I guess has a working single window mode now, amongst other things? I wouldn’t mind trying it, but I’m a bit weary atm of buggering my 2.6 install, and all my addons. Just wondering if anyone has played with it, and in particular the painting/brush improvements.
PS if anyone mentions photoshop I’m coming over to your house to kick you in the balls. :ba:
PPS just kidding, although I do need to travel more.
Currently I’m using 2.7.3 and it’s not much different from the previous version, except for the Single Window thingy. Actually that feature has been around for some time but it didn’t save the window state. Now it saves but it’s still a little far from finished. The dock arrangement is a nightmare.
Other than that nice release. I don’t use it to its full extent, so no help on painting/brush etc. Sorry
Looks like a release to make the wait for 2.8 less long
Not installed yet, as i will wait until i’m sure all the windows versions of plugins i have a real use and need for texture work are reported compatible.
The brush engine was further improved. It now reads more events from graphic tablets and maps them to more settings. There are configurable response curves for every kind of event. Additionally resources (brushes etc.) can be tagged and filtered via tags.
Public API has changed, though, so if you have old scripts and plugins, chances are that you are going to see lots of warnings about trying to call an obsolete function/procedure.
I’m kinda biased, but I wouldn’t trade even officially unstable 2.7.x for older stable 2.6.x. There’s too much cleanup here and there including some major changes.
I started using it a couple weeks ago. The UI is nicer to work with especially if you have several programs open at once and keep moving between them.
I have an Intuos and it works pretty well with it. Pressure, velocity seem to work. I have heard this is hit or miss depending on the system you are on.
I’m running Win 7 64 and like I say, it all seems to work for me.
I only scratch the surface of capabilities to do texture maps and such.
I’m really itching to try it out- the only plugins that are precious to me are FIL, ORA support, Gimp Paint Studio, and the normal map one - anyone have any feedback on these? Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks prokoudine, I guess I’ll be joining the ranks of beta testers soon
joe, if you were using the normalmap plugin a while back and had bad results it may be because Blender had a non-standard method for implementing them, which they have since changed.
I’m really looking forward to 2.8, and 2.7.3 is definitely a big step for the GIMP. There are a lot of things that worked in GIMP but didn’t work very nicely (compared to PS). Luckily it looks like many of those things will be improved to the level of PS (or beyond). Have you looked at the roadmap for the next couple versions? It looks like a lot of good things are coming, and faster too! Apparently GIMP is also moving to a faster release schedule. I’ve detailed a couple of my thoughts on my blog: http://jaydez-tech.blogspot.com/2011/08/future-of-gimp.html
As a matter of fact, unified transform tool is already being worked on. If the guy is fast enough, it could be in 2.10. If he isn’t, then it’s probably 3.0.
Bit of a n00b GIMP question but what are the pro’s and cons of the portable and standard versions? I understand the basic idea of the portable version but what advantages does the standard install give you? I mean if there are no advantages of the standard install wouldn’t everybody just use the portable install even if they didn’t need the portability?
Where do you get the portable Gimp from? I totally failed in installing 2.7.3, all the websites I checked recommended using a ppa that ended up only being 2.7.2. I would love to give 2.7.3 another shot though.
Also, are there any bleeding edge nightly builds anywhere? That would be ideal.
portable version can be found on partha’s website that i posted few posts above.
Portable version allow you in theory to just put them into a usb key and use them then in any computer without installing anything.
I don’t know if the gimp portable version works like this as i have not tried it yet.
Yeah I’m on Linux too. On closer inspection I realise you’re right. Maybe we need to start rolling our own and uploading them, or poke glenn to make a new build…
It looks like Mattheus updated his PPA end of last week (for 11.04/Natty too), but I heard reports that not everything is right with his build, i.e. single-window mode not saved across sessions which is weird since it was fixed back in June or so. Could be worth a try nevertheless.
