Give me land! Lots of land!

So I’m trying to make this fictional medieval land and for some reason, I can’t grasp the concept of making the land for it. I can make the houses but the idea of creating the land escapes me. Now, the land itself has to have roads going through the town. I just need someone to point me in the right direction.

What I’ve done in the past is just make a large subdivided plane and used the sculpting tools to create the hills and valleys. You can use the masking brush on areas that you don’t want to move, like flat areas for houses, lakes, etc. For roads, one method is to create them from a single polygon (and extruding from there) and use the snapping tools to get it to stick to the ground (use the top view for best results).

Just a few tips that might get you started.

That’s a good start. I think what my problem is that I’ve been gathering so many images to invoke an idea in my head, I wasn’t able to get an clear idea.

I find that the easiest way to create mountains/hills is to subdivide a plane and then use Proportional Editing to create the unevenness.

Have you tried the landscape generator?

I did in the past and for some reason, I think that it wasn’t enough for me. I will have to go back and try it again. Also I need to create the roads on it too.

use the cloud filter in photoshop, that should be worth a try and use it as bump map. then retouch it and start planning the locations
