Lots of complicated concepts and this will take years to master them all.
Small steps, and lots of YT videos and the manual. Maybe a commercial training set or two.

Everything in the beginning is hard… could you write at the first day in school ? And even if you could/can: Can you write good stories with the first draft ? It simply takes time.
An internet forum is not a step-by-step classroom. If you have a specific question on a technique or procedure, we’re happy to help. But “please make this not hard” - that’s simply quite vague, and just sounds like a whinge looking for a shoulder to cry on.
And for what it’s worth, avoid Andrew Price (donut) tutorials.

I’m not a pro (by any stretch of the imagination), but here is what I have found useful over the years.

Follow long form tutorials on YT to get an overview of everything that is available, even if you end up ignoring 80% of it for specific projects. This fulfils the “you don’t know what you don’t know” aspect of new subject areas.

Find more specific tutorials once you get started that support your goal/project. This will be harder to follow initially, but will be beneficial for particular, focussed problems that need solving.

Learn and remember shortcuts well, and find plugins that are tailored to your style and/or requirements. For me, Mesh Machine and Hard Ops/Boxcutter have been my primary tools that aren’t native to Blender.

Your approach sounds really solid! I understand that forums aren’t classrooms, but they are communities where people seek guidance. If my question wasn’t clear, I’m happy to rephrase it. I was looking for practical advice on simplifying the process,
not just venting.
Also, curious—why avoid Andrew Price’s tutorials? I’ve seen them recommended quite a bit.
No they are good, but obviously are very basic but necessary if you are starting to learn blender, but if you are intermediate/senior artist that comes from other software to learn blender then you don’t need them LOL (for example in my case as self-taught artist i never did the donut tutorial when i started learning blender, but i watched it way later) also there is grant abbit and other more related blender youtubers that i may recommend depending on what skill you want to improve on (jard surface modelling/topology, texturing, jard surface/character sculpting, rendering, animation, rigging, etc)
He takes far too many hours to demonstrate far too little, and often skips very important fundamentals.
If I had a donut for every time I’ve read “I’ve completed the donut tutorial, but I’m not sure how to do anything on my own now” - i’d have a lot of donuts.
I’ve always thought of Andrew Price’s tutorials as being better for intermediates, despite being marketed as newbie tuts. It’s good the way he gets into the finer details on some things, but it’s knowledge better gleamed once you’ve got a handle on the bare basics, rather than introduced to up front.
I partly think the problem is the most recent ‘donut’ series, it’s trying to do too much.
When I first started with Blender I pretty much did start with the donut, but it covered much of the basics, which while I wasn’t new to 3D, etc I was very new to Blender.
So it quickly filled in the need of having a fairly good idea of what I wanted to do, but just didn’t know how it worked in Blender.
The old series had no Geometry Nodes, Animation and likely a bunch of other stuff. You end up with a pretty basic donut (almost something like a 3D Studio scanline render from the 90’s), but you at least walked away with a good initial understanding and no longer wondered, “Why the hell doesn’t left click select the darn cube and why is this target bullseye moving around every time I do so.”
Well, I think it’s worth checking, if you learning something from these tutorial and you’re getting autonomy step by step then that’s all that matters.
However, it’s worth checking other channels, like grant habbit, blender cookie and people affiliated with them, cg boost too and probably others …
One annoying thing with blender guru is that there is some kind of salesman / absolute truth to what he say, and sometimes he is wrong and basically you can’t find out unless you’re experienced…
Which is really not something you should be bothered with at the beginning, but especially with theoretical stuff I think he tends to oversimplify stuff too much which is okto get started but you shouldn’t stay stuck there in order to evolve and become really good.
In the end, every tutors tends to learn a lot of stuff , then they deliver a striped down / simplified version to their audience. Say he learned only with it’s own tutorials he won’t be as good as he is now…
Last stuff to keep in mind, many tutors on youtube aren’t professionals , it’s nothing to worry about when you start learning, but if you plan to work in CG you’ll have to find these kind of learning materials as well.
At the end of the day, there isn’t many differences , and a bunch of hobbyist are more talented than the average artist. But there are some extra knowledge you should know in order to be industry compatible…
And about your initial question, you don’t have to worry too much about being slow. If you’re slow but the result is good, then it’s already a good basis. Speed will come later with practice.
If you’re slow and the result isn’t there yet, it’s better to focus on the result first.
And to get faster, as said IMO it’s 90% practice, and 10% picking a few tricks here and there from advanced artists.
I tend to disagree a bit with this, one of the problems with learning is that if you just follow instructions sometimes you do not really understand why and how things work.
I always recommend trying to analyze things, a good example is nodes.
Plug this in here and you get that, but what is the node actually doing? What does each input do, what are its input and output ranges etc.
I much prefer tutorials that explain the concepts, thought process and parameters of everything (even if you do not need them for the task involved) an example would be Erindale’s node tutorials. They are long but contain a lot of information that will help you in the future.
Yes you’re right ! I think it depends a bit though … When things are mostly technical like nodes, materials, rig , scripts, indeed breaking down the process, explaining core concepts is much more important than the end result. Because at the end of the day we don’t want to memorize every possible node combination to be able to do anything, but rather being able to find our own solutions to a particular problem that doesn’t exist in a tutorial…
Now when it comes to beginners tutorials, as a tutor I think it’s ok to deliberately avoid explaining some stuff, and as a user I think it’s ok to do stuff even if we don’t completely understand what we’re doing.
That said, I can’t agree more on the overall, at some point what to do isn’t enough and it’s much more important to understand why we do so…
People blindly following rules like always model with quads, always apply transforms and so on without knowing when we should break these rules are likely to get stuck in their progression. I think it’s impossible to become really good without a deeper understanding of what we do !

When it comes to technical stuff—like nodes, rigs, or scripts—it’s way more valuable to understand the core ideas than to just copy steps. Memorizing every node combo isn’t practical, but knowing how to think through a problem and come up with your own solution? That’s where the real skill is.
And yeah, for beginner tutorials, I agree—it’s okay to skip some explanations. Sometimes you just need to get things working first, and the deeper understanding comes later. But eventually, that “why” becomes everything. Otherwise, you end up stuck, just blindly following rules without knowing when or why to bend them.
Mastery definitely comes from questioning, experimenting, and really understanding what’s going on under the hood. That’s how you move beyond the surface and start making things with intention. ![]()
