Giving an object a cartoon outline in eevee?

I am trying to turn renders of objects into 2D sprites. I think I have that figure out. What I am having trouble doing is giving the object a black outline like in a cartoon.
I found several videos on how to do it using an emission shader, but most were old, and the emission shader mechanics seemed to have changed because they don’t match the ones in the videos so the method doesn’t work for me. I found a modern one, but the creator of the video went way overboard and made it far more advanced than I need or could understand.
So I could really appreciate some help on this?

You might want to look into freestyle there are many tutorials. it is at the bottom of render properties (before colour management.)

Here is one tut

I saw that as being an alternative. Does anyone know if there are differences in the results yielded by both methods?

Thanks for all the information guys. You have been a big help.
