Gizmo / Pivot alignment

Trying to be an Ex-Maya user and the one thing that has always given me trouble when learning blender is aligning the tool handles.

I am trying to move these verts down along that angle the object is sitting. In maya you use d and the handles snap to whatever component you want to use as the move axis.

I cant figure out how to do this with blender. I have tried all the orientations and pivot locations so far and cant get the handles oriented in the direction I want.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

In Blender 2.8 there are two settings for orientation.

The one on the right gives you the option to store and reuse any orientation you want.

When you click on that little plus sign, it creates a new copy of that orientation and makes it the current selection.

Now you can use it on other objects, or on other edges/faces of the current one.
