Glass...

how do i make glass like this:

http://img33.exs.cx/img33/5002/Image409.jpg

everytime i try i get a clear brick, no realistic depth at all… :-?

You’re talking about Yafray?

Set RayTrans on, then adjust the IOR to somewhere between 1.4 to 1.9 (the physically realistic range for glass).

I believe that image is from this thread:

Have you read Prince’ tutorial?

Now extrude and scale so that the sides are a little thicker.

im not sure what thats supposed to mean. explain.

i meant the actual glas cube, i’ll figure out the lighting and the relections later

I haven’t read this tutorial but I guess it started with a cube and it needs some thickness to be added to the cube. In order to do this, enter edit mode (tab) with your cuve selected, select all the vertice (A key, they are all yellow dots now), press E key (validate without moving your mouse) and then make ALT+S in order to scale inward along the normals.

Hope this is helpful. After seeing your posts about making glass material, I put up two tutorials on ::feeblemind.org:: in order to help further:
-About reflections
-About transparency and refraction

I hope they could be useful.

So what i end up with is a a smaller cube inside? i did that but only the outer box was transparent. the rest was a solid gray block. ARRG!

here is the result:

heres the .blend file, incase someone can show me what to do.

I have to say, it does look cool, but it’s not what im looking for…

Your post (and that picture) got me in the mood to see if I could come close to what you are looking for so I threw this together after about 15 minutes of playing around. Is this what you are talking about?..

nope. i looking for somthing like the first picture. it has depth. it looks more real. what i want to know is how to do that.

Hmm…I’m wondering if I should change the texture in my environ mapping or use a bump map to simulate that subtle “swirly” pattern in the ice-cube looking thing. The dropshadow and raymirror thing (as well as the black outline is’nt too difficult to do if that’s part of the “effect” your looking for). Anyway…

Your transparency depth is set too low.

The transparency depth can be found just under the RayTransp button. Here’s what I got with your scene with the depth set to 4.

How do you get the rounded corners?. Rounded corners=more surface area and thus more area for the light to reflect off of.

Ooo, I thought you were talking about caustics. The Depth option indeed does the trick. For realistic glass I suggest you turn Raymir on too (about 0.1) and give the scene an environment so the cube has something to reflect. The IOR of real glass types lies between 1.5 and 1.7 and a high Fresnel value gives this extra touch to glass

@Greygoose: To make corners rounded; quote from Prince:

Now select the cube and go into edit mode and select all the vertices. Press
w -> subdivide and do that three times then press w -> smooth five times.
Now extrude and scale so that the sides are a little thicker. Subsurf twice and Set Smooth. Select all the vertices and press cntrl n to recalculate norms outside.

Sweetness. So thats what depth is for.

i love this place

Thanx, i’ll play around with it.

Wow, I’ve never even used that “smooth” option before but I was amazed at what it can do. I used subdivision, subsurf and smooth. That’s all and it made a world of difference. Thank’s for a fantastic tutorial! .

lol, my question turned into a tutorial.

it somehow dosent look like the first pic, the first one has all that black around the edges that somehow make it realistic, is it the angle?

Instead of subdividing to smooth out corners use Bevel on lvl 1 twice then put subsurface on.

Heres a yellow cube i did a while back.

I havent moved my files from my old harddrive yet so I cant drop the blend file nor can I i show you it without yafray.

Gryphon, that image is uncomfortably big, maybe a link would suffice?

Hafunui,

it somehow dosent look like the first pic, the first one has all that black around the edges that somehow make it realistic, is it the angle?

that’s because he’s using Yafray, but you’re using Blender internal. Different renderers, different features, etc…

Here’s your scene, tweaked for and rendered in, Yafray:
