Being a World of Warcraft player for a long time, I’ve always loved the vehicle design of the gyrocopter aircraft that engineers can build. I had always meant to try to rebuild the thing with proper details in Blender, but only recently got around to it.
This thing was a lot of fun to build. I used a program called ModelView that opens the World of Warcraft game data. You can export game models into various formats, so I exported the gyrocopter, imported it into blender, and used it to get the proportions correct.
I’ve never been very hot at texture work, so I’m sure with some proper skilled texture work it could be even better.
I built two scenes for the model, the one in flight uses a ton of sapling generated trees and a character model photoshopped in. The landed shot is pretty much pure Blender.
Nobody tells me things. I started clicking around the rendering & lighting forum for something and wondered what all this Cycles business was.
Who forgot to notify me they put this thing in? Blender is sucking me in again, I spent about 2 days reworking the thing to render in Cycles. Learned a LOT about UV mapping, since it was a system I never used much in the past.
