going 3d..

I recently graduated from college with a BA in animation, but chose to focus on claymation. Now I want to take the plunge into the strange world of 3d, but I’m not sure if blender is the way to go…
I have been playing around with a coverdisc version of cinema 4d for a few nights and found it quite easy to learn, but it has some render size limitations and only a manual on disc. I have been looking at the new version 8.5 of c4d, but the price is very steep so blenders pricetag really apeals to me!
What will I miss if I choose one over the other (exept the 600 USD), and is blender actually an option for the beginner? -And will it cut it for the pro?

Any feedback will put a smile on my face  !

Well, I don’t know what you’ll miss, but it’s definately an option for the beginner - after all it’s free and its feature list grows rapidly!
Of more help to you would probably be this thread :

Hope it helps !

Nice thread, looks like I’m not the first to be stuck between c4d and blender.
I’m looking for an app that will let me do pretty basic modelling and animation, not totally unlike claymation. Photorealisme is of no interest to me. The c4d site is sooo shiny, it does a good job trying to lure my money away from me. Will blender be able to deliver?

I can not tell anything from the view of a pro, but I can say that Blender is absolutely good to learn for newbies. Three months ago I was a complete stranger to both Blender and 3D modeling, now I can already make some nice things (here are some links to my first projects: number 1, #2, #3 and #4)

Some other reasons why to choose Blender:

  • It’s completely free (but I see you figured that out already ;))
  • There are a LOT of free tutorials on the internet from which you can learn it (I myself learned everything from online tutorials so far)
  • There’s a great (up to date) book coming out soon: the Blender 2.3 guide
  • It’s still in development, thus better versions with bug fixes and new features are released quite often

I have no idea what cinema 4d is though, so there’s no way I can compare these two.

Just ordered & paid the 2.3 manual. wish me luck…
