Going to start a course in blender and need help what to buy!

Hello everyone out there!

Want to first off excuse admins if I have put this thread in the wrong Place, or perhaps if you can move it to the appropriate one. Thanks!

So as the title says I am going to start a course with blender.

My goals with blender: Is for now to do 3d models and perhaps 2-10 minutes short animations.

I have been looking around for laptops to get but I can’t really decide which one to get. Everyone says so different things about laptops etc.

I would love if anyone of you exerienced people out there could tell me what is a good laptop to get?

The MOST important part is for it to be light, and easy to travel with as I am going to do most of my work traveling and living in very different places. Needs to fit easily in a bag and not take up much space.

I have been looking at Surface Pro 4, one of their best ones with i7, 16gb ram and 256 SSD disk. Integrated Graphics i would guess it is. It seems so slim and leight to travel with.

I have seen some videos of people using MAYA and Blender with Surface Pro and what my untrained Eye can see it doesn’t seem that bad at all. They even used an i5 in the video.

Would that be enough for what I am looking to achieve?

I would be very happy for some responses and help in this matter.

Best regards,

Karl

If you are going to use it at home ask a family or friend to build you a pc I very recommend this… be sure to have someone that does know how to built one though. I have a iMac 27 Waste of money for life Think before you buy thats all I can say.

Hey,

I am not going to have it at home, at least not for a few years and then I will buy a desktop myself and build it.
Right now I am looking for something to use when i am traveling.

i use a lenovo y410p for travel, i think they have new models out, but its got lots of power for crazy mobility. not like those Asus ROG beasts. my brother used to have one, not any better then a desktop really.

the intel/nvidia GPU thing is a bit weird at times, but ive never had much issue rendering. the battery is too weak on mine to run the nvidia at full power when not charging, but its good enough for modeling. basic computing on max performance settings, i get about 3 hours of battery. go a little bigger and get an nvidia, its worth it. but to save battery, the nvidia gpu can be disabled in the BIOS.

the 1600x900 is nice, took me a while to find a computer with a high resolution on a small screen size. the colors are a little washed out, being a “gaming computer” and all. i havent been in the laptop market for a while, is 1080p standard now?

my biggest complaint is heat, long rendering sessions might not be a good idea without a cooling pad. less weight at the cost of cooling.

external mouse is required, simply because my touchpad bugs out when the lid is closed. whether its been fixed in new models i have no idea. its not like touchpads are useful or anything.

i run a fresh copy of windows 7 home premium and it works just fine, im missing a few special system hotkeys and usb runs at 2.0, but i can deal with that.

oh and then theres that red keyboard… …without a number pad…. but the tiny 17in form factor makes it worth it.

The Specs on mine:
-Intel i7 4700MQ (2.4ghz), HD4600 GPU
-Nvidia GT 755M (hybrid/optimus?)
-17" 1600x900
-8 GB RAM
-Samsung 840 EVO - 120gb (upgraded)
