Gold Leaf

I’m practicing replacing 2d elements with 3D but I’ve run into a problem with materials and textures on this one. It’s becoming obvious to me that I’m not going to be able to just uv map this one and be done with it and I don’t want to spend 3 days worth of my spare time trying to get it right.

Has anyone here ever textured a gold leaf dome even semi-realistically? I’m about to break open Broken’s blurry reflections build and try out the gold texture he put on Suzanne. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated because UV maps are usually about as close to realism as I ever try to get.

My sorry attempt with Photoshop’s cloning and healing brushes should give you a good laugh. I know my Blender dome isn’t quite right yet either but that isn’t hard to fix with proportional edititng.

i’m still a bit of a noob so forgive me if this is rediculous.
Have you tried using uv/bump map for the tiles and using a voronoi textured material? I think that the shapes on that page look a lot like gold leaf.

You could try a semi square bump texture with voronoi on Chebechev with the various noise sliders at the right position.

Or you can try 3 wood textures with tight colorband with one each mapped to just x, y and z.

I’m taking the first image is the result you want.

This is about as good as I’m going to get it cuz I’m sick of playing with it. Hopefully it’ll be good enough to fool a casual viewer.

That looks really good. I think smaller tiles would look better but if I hadn’t seen the original photo I might not be saying that.

Yeah, I was thinking exactly the same thing. I made hte tiles by selecting all faces and extruding to individual faces command. I just used half of the default 32 X 32 UV sphere. I just need to go back in and count the number of rows b4 I remake it.
I wasn’t going to re-do it but, seeing your thoughts echo my own is a sign that I should.
Many thanx to all of you.

If you could have subsurfed (simple) once before doing the extrude the tile sizes would probably be almost identical size. Then do away with the left hand light so that there are only 2 primary light directions (more like the original) and you will have a pretty close rendition.

Oh, and immediately after you extrude, save the resulting selected vertices/faces as a vertex group so that you can easily select them again. Then you can experiment with materials on just those faces with ease.

The original has spotlights encompasing the dome. You can’t see that because I tried to use the cloning brush in Photoshop and made a big mess.

For the correct tile pattern, try Texturemaker, make a texture with a 8x8 grid, then run a Gravimetric distortion filter on it…

That should make the tiles you are needing , with the rounded corners.
I would set the mesh smoothness on too, and do a specular map for the shiny bits of the tiles.

It is also quite possible to make a map texture for the spotlights, and just use mixmode “add” it to the material.
that way you will have absolute control on how the color effects the metal surface.

hope that helps
