Google SketchUp

Has anyone heard of this? I just stumbled on it. It was in the “web clips” of my gmail account. Ive never heard of the program before but it looks ok. It looks more like a CAD program than a 3d modelling software from the download software, but I will have to try it for myself. Man google just thinks of everything. I honsetly wonder what market they will break into next. Automobiles? Homes (rent an apartment in the luxurious new googleplex down the steet!)? :o [edit] forgot the link: http://sketchup.google.com/index.html[/edit]

for what sketchup does [mechanical or architectural stuff] there’s nothing like it, for organic things it’s not the ultimate tool

We trialled this at my work at the end of last year, before they were bought out by Google. It’s very good for architectural viz, (faster than blender, mostly because of native axis constraints and a dead awesome snapping system) but thats about it. You’re pretty limited as far as rendering goes, you’d never approach something photo realsitic with it.

Some architects here use Sketchup for design vizualisation. Its very quick and user friendly, and quite cheap too. However its not for high quality rendering and presentation type of work.
Excellent design 3d app though.

wow, looks awesome!!!
i cant wait untill the free version comes out for mac!

I wonder how long it will take them to get an image editor.

well, actually, i think they have some kind of really watered down, iphoto like image editor called picassa

yup, it has basic image editing capabilities like contrast and color changes, remove red eye, and cropping. You can even make posters and screensavers with it. Its not a photoshop by any means though.

I love sketchup. Even more now it’s free. Makes me think to go mac, if I emulate it on linux the buttons do not render correctly, making it impossible to use. I would recommend it though. Certainly for the ones who use blender for architectual stuff, makes life much easier.

(I have good hopes for a linux sketchup, picasa is for linux as well)

It isn’t easy to save the edited photos though…

Since this thread was already bumped…

Google is dishing out money to get Gimp full SVG capabilities as part of their ‘bounty’ program. It seems that Google wants an on-line version of Gimp.

Adding to the bumpness.
Sketchup is a lovely app for fast work but if I remember correctly there are no plans for a linux release as the original developers feel there is not a great enough demand in the corporate sector.
