Got Advice?: Video Capture and Compression Codec

(It didn’t post the first time so trying again)

I want to put together a guide so that people who don’t know how can learn how to make video captures of their blender program, then compress that video into something that can be uploaded to a viral site such as YouTube. Then, if it is possible, I will want to include in the guide how you can embed the video into a post that you may have in the forum.

So, I was looking for advice on the best capture programs and compression codecs that have good compatibility and that will also be capable of being uploaded to YouTube or some other viral site.

thanks

there’s a good video tutorial on how to make video tutorials…I just watched it a month ago and it was very good, what youre lookin for. Watch it and see. It’s probably on the main page, maybe under writer’s info. Short answer is use CamStudio at 10fps and encode with xvid.

If i read this right, you want to make a video tutorial on how to make video tutorials, yet you don’t actually know how? lol

As to screencasting software, I highly suggest “hypercam”. The compression is great, the quality is crystal clear and it doesnt get slowed down as easy compared to other screencasting softwares. The trial puts a pretty much invisible watermark on the video otherwise it cost $30.

Compared to soem screencasting software that cost well over $300, this one actually perform alot better, the video compression doesnt result in fuzzy images or shifts in colours and you can easily record large resolution videos at 24FPS without everything being jumpy. Ive tried about 30 differernt screencasting softwares, including the major advertised ones etc… and they are horrible… they just pack them with features to warrant high prices rather than optimisation and quality.

as to youtube im not sure what video format they support, though the xdiv codec IMO is nice but i doubt youtube supports it.

You cant embed youtube videos in these forums but you can in normal webpages. Placing a URL link is fine though.

There’s Open Source screen capture software too! Cam Studio I have it but haven’t used it yet, so someone will have to let me know about the quality.

I’ve used it.

It worked quite well untill you went into higher resolution recording, then it went retarded. It’s also quite buggy… If i recall correctly, it saves the file properly after you’ve finished recording, and for large recordings this become a resource hog and resulted in many crashes.

edit: heres an example of hypercam:

the Xvid codec, found here: http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/ may be needed.

Thanks, I tried it out this morning. Dunno if it’s my crappy mobo graphics or not, but Hypercam seems to slow down my system a lot more than Cam Studio…

Well i can’t say much to that other than for me it’s the otherway round…

Did you try differernt codecs? Xvid is what i use, some of the other codecs makes 200mb files for something like that video above^ which might be why it was slow. But i can record fullscreen, (1280*1024 odd) without any issues at all.

Cam studio might have been updated since i last used it, but it was unstable for me and thus I couldnt risk losing my recordings aswell
