GPU utilisation - Blender 5.0.1

I noticed the following GPU utilisation while using Blender 5.0.1:

Not sure if it is intended fuctionality, but even after the render is done and I’m just in the viewport (viewport shading only with render window closed), GPU memory is still quite high up in usage.

That results in running out of VRAM when I try to do another render, as new GPU memory is added “on top” of the one while “idle”. I am having to close/open Blender to clear the GPU memory and do another render.

Is that “normal”?

This is very interesting. I don’t think I have had this problem at all in 5.0.1, and my ws is similar: RTX 5070Ti (x2), Ryzen 9 9950X3D, 32GB DDR5. Are you using TurboTools or anything else that has a caching system? Or maybe something in your compositor keeping crap in memory?.. Does this happen in any scene, regardless if it is heavy or not?

No Turbo tools installed.
This is a screenshot of my compositor.

I don’t know if any of these nodes would result in stuf being kept in memory. -everything is GPU based-

Following add-ons installed:

Yeah. It is actually normal. Blender uses VRAM and it’s not always very efficient. If you need a lot of VRAM for rendering, you can render from command line without having Blender’s UI open.

Cycles Texture Cache will be of interest to you. It’s going to be in the next version and it will allow to save loads of memory. It’s in the experimental builds and you could try it, although, it’s not released yet, so if it’s important work, you might want to wait and of course you should make backups of your scenes if you decide to test it.

If you were going the command-line route, I very highly recommend B-Renderon. It is the single best investment for Blender I have ever made.

I would just like to say that add-ons are great, and B-Renderon seems awesome, but one shouldn’t think that they are necessary. It’s great, but we are just talking about simple rendering here and you can definitely do that from command line just fine without any additional software and without spending any money. It’s really simple and easy. No add-ons needed. No need for a bazooka to kill a mosquito.

Not sure how much it will effect but GPU subfividion could also be using resorces if you have many subxivided oblects, you csn gurn it off in prefdrences.

B-Renderon is not an addon as you were assuming, but rather an incredible standalone Blender file render queue/management app that you drag and drop blends into and has an astonishing array of features and overrides. It is an app for folks that actually make money with Blender (I’m guessing that isn’t you), or amateurs who value their time. Pros like myself kill mosquitos with bazookas all the effing time if it makes us more efficient and puts more money in our pockets. So yeah, B-Renderon is necessary. You should probably do more more research next time bro.

You guessed wrong. I just don’t need a render manager. :man_shrugging:

And to be honest I am a bit puzzled by the response. Yes, the add-on or whatever you want to call it - “incredible standalone Blender file render queue/management app”(I think “add-on” is just shorter to write, isn’t it? ) is nice. If one wants to buy it, that’s awesome. I looked through it one more time and I am sure it pays off in many cases. In others it doesn’t. Not everybody needs to use different Blender versions for rendering and render 10 files all at once. And it’s also not that difficult to write a script for that if it’s occasionally needed. Not everybody works exactly the same way as you do …or even does the same job as you do with Blender.
