Has anyone any tips for rendering realistic grass? I need to model a view of a field with the camera quite near the ground.

I’ve tried using Dupliverts but blender always crashes when I render it with the required resolution. I also tried playing with textures and bump maping but can’t get it looking anything like realistic grass.

Anyone know how to fix the crashing when you model a large number of polygons?
