Greenish Glow

Random lamp inspired by quartz lamps I have seen in the store.

The real lamp I based this from:

how did you do the glow ?

with compositor or some nodes set up
was it done in Cycles or EEVEE ?

Categorically speaking, this lamp would be a practical light. It’s something in the shot that, we humans know, is a source of light. But it often works best if it is not the actual source of light.

You often want the lighting in any “product shot” to be “plausible, but better.” A studio photographer would be asking him/herself: "How can I make this quartz lamp look sexy?" (And: “darkroom manipulation” is almost universal. The shot that you see is almost never exactly what was on that 4x5 piece of film.)

I used an emit shader in place of the diffuse shader, added a point light above it to increase the illumination and then I finally used a blur and mix node with ‘screen value’ for the glow.

Nice. Two suggestions for improvement, though:

  • Add some imperfections to the black base material of the lamp (e.g. dents, scratches, burrs)
  • The glow against the ground is too obviously not produced by light passing through the crystal. Not that there is anything wrong with faking lighting conditions, but nasty me can’t help to not notice  Maybe you can put the glow into a more logical spot and have the lamp base cast a shadow. Also the crystal cries for fake caustics…
