grey park music video (upd 4/11: testing different style)

ok, the thing isn’t ready really, so let’s move on to this forum section.

so, for the ones that didn’t see the first version, and who don’t know what this is about here’s the story in short:

my friend is doing music, in a band called “grey park”. it could also be called as project, rather than band. mostly they do lo-fi-elektro-dance-disco-noise… quite hard to desribe. anyways, I’ve done some disk-cover-art for them before, and of course, I’m a long time groupie that’s going on all the gigs

grey park can be found here: http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/pirtola/grey.park/

so currently, I’m trying to visualize some of their songs. videos will be played (if they come out any good) in gigs, as background canvas, or on some of these art-festivals we go to… we will see.

I have several ideas, some are more abstract, some are more like a story (a real mtv music video like hehehh) cartoony even… but, I decided to kick the project going with one of my long time favourite characters, who is now performing the dance for greypark.

first part:

http://www.lib.hel.fI/~basse/tmp/tanssi_i.mpeg
(otherwise done, but details still need tweaking, and I decided to use different size for rendering, so I need to adjust the camera too)

second part:
http://www.lib.hel.fi/~basse/tmp/tanssi2_test2.avi
(worked with this the whole morning, it’s first real render, trying out camera angles, and I notice we need more of them… also moving cameras perhaps, going round and round…
oh, and only half of the second part song used yet)

some shots:

all comments and crits are highly appreciated.

thanks.

I like this 2nd one better than your original. Seems to be more fluid and a better flow than the first anim.

Another great piece basse.

cool! keep going. In some shots the grey dancer seems truncated or at least severely shortened because she’s cut off by the frame. . I don’t know if its intentional- I’m just observing what I see.

hmm, experiementing with different style… I like the original style of the character, but I don’t know, something about it with this music didn’t seem right… it looked too realistic somehow…

so, here’s a different style for the character:

http://www.kimppu.org/basse/tmp/tanssi/still3.jpg
http://www.kimppu.org/basse/tmp/tanssi/still4.jpg

what do you think?

as i said… i love it

thanks.

well, doesn’t look like many people have anything to comment, but here’s a animation with the toonshaded style…

Really Beautiful!

(Can’t say i think much of the music though, sorry! :-? maybe a little too lo-fi for my tastes )

BTW. I think the z-offset material property would help your ‘skirt’ through the floor problem. If I remember correctly that’s what it does!

I liked it better without toon shading IMO.
The still pictures you showed are impressive, but the animation is a bit too grainy and it doesn’t match that well with the cartoon look.
I repeat myself, the design of that dancer kicks ass. I love it so much. It’s between hi-tech sci-fi and The City of the Lost Children-like fantasy.
I can’t wait to see it finished.

Very interesting character. I like her very much. Cool toon.

I like the toon shaded version. I still prefer your original, but this is also very nice.

Great work again basse.

I haven’t been able to see the cell shaded video yet, but the stills look nice (not sure if I prefer them to the previous one)
My favourite thing about this video is actually that chair. I think I like the shading on the walls and floor better in the last stills (I’ll have to watch the original anim again to be sure)

:o
Your style are cool. I like all on this animation. Great Work

hmm… this is tricky. I can’t say myself which one is better… somehow I got this weird feeling that the first material looked too realistic… and I wanted something simpler, to make her just a form of a dancer, not a real 3d dancer…

hmm… well, I keep on going let’s see what happens.

oh, and I let you in in a little secret, the total leght of song is something around 5 minutes  and there are many parts. so the ones that hate the first lo-fi-triiii-traa-treee-eee-ee… music, will perhaps like the second part more, and the second part in itself will have a lot of changes too in style… and, we are going to see MANY dancers in the end

anyways, it’s easy to render these animations even in three different material versions… and then run them all at once and judge then… heh. we will see…

thanks!
