"Gripping"

May I present to you… my latest work: “Gripping

This was inspired by some sculpting video on Youtube and I thought the imagery was quite provoking.
Overall the sculpt took about 10 hours and then another 6 for creating the textures, shaders and lighting of the scene.

Post-Processing was done in Photoshop.
Overall its about 2 Million verts but the indicator in Blender doesn’t factor in the microdisplacement…

Both the head of the snake and the hand have a 6k texture file, which is a bit overkill for the little use I’m getting out of it. I mainly chose that high of a resolution so that i could just use smart uv project and not have to worry about unwrapping hi-poly meshes

Here is the clay view, as you can see the whole tail is just microdisplacement but pretty much everything else is very detailed.

Any comments or critics highly appreciated

It looks really cool and interesting. I see the snake as a pet (because it’s not squeezing his hand). The vignette is a nice touch and the feel overreal feel is warm. I like how the nails look almost realistic. Critics:
The pinky finger on his hand is intersecting with the snakes body. The snakes throat is completely black, where as it shouldn’t be. You should increase the SSS values there. But hey, that’s just me trying to see ‘bad spots’.

I think it looks quite good overall! There are some things that look weird though. First of all: The arm looks very(!) skinny. Usually the wrist is quite thin but afterwards the ellbow gets a little wider. That doesnt seem to be the case in your image.
And the second thing: The lighting and Shader could definitely be improved. I looks more like a Blender Internal Render than a Cycles Render to me. Needs SSS and some more interesting lighting. A rim light could add a nice touch there I think.

The arm was modeled after me and I’m very skinny so thats where that comes from and I definetly agree on the SSS especially in the mouth part and there is actually a rim light already in there

Then that might be justified. I just think that the arm looks a bit weird, but that may be what you’re going for. Remember that Art doesn’t always have to replicate completly, but you can do whatever you want

How did u do the lighning SO well??

So I updated it with your suggestions and some of the blender groups in facebook, I completely changed the SSS on the snakes mouth and added a light on the top to put more focus on the head. Not sure if it worked though. Let me know what you think!

WOW, the work is cool but also a little creepy

I updated the page with the new version so the one on the top is now the new final render

Hey can you upload the original render (the first picture with no SSS) so that we can see the comparison? It would be really cool to see just how much a small detail such as SSS can do to a final render.

heres the before and after, I think its mainly the added glossiness that made it a lot better
