Hair Particle Manipulation: Is there a way to not do it on the other side of a mesh?

So I’m trying to comb hair, but when I enter particle mode it makes all the particles visible, and effected even if they are on the other side of the model. This is really annoying when I’m trying to comb the hair on one side of his head, but it’s also combing the hair on the other side of his head and it’s all just a jumbled mess. I figure there has to be a way to make it so this doesn’t happen, but I can’t find it.
