Hair question

I have a little cat model that I am modeling, rigging and texturing to use in learning some creature animation in the near future.

But hair particles have been confusing the heck out of me. I want to create a a coat of body hair but with 0 initial parent particles so that I can manually add parent hairs in particle edit mode. The thing is no matter the settings I use when I am in particle edit mode and use the add brush it will either not add a parent strand when I click on the mesh or if it adds a parent hair it adds it in a location where I didn’t click.

I would like to know what causes this as I want to add parent strands where I click. The current situation of random hair placement or no hair is super frustrating.

I just tried it with a cube, setting the emissions to 0 so that there wasn’t any when I started and used the defaults on the add, and it worked like I expected. Not sure why it’s not working for you.

I played around with some other files it turns out it’s a bit wonky if the sub-surface modifier is above the particle one. Re-ordering the modifiers around solved my problem.

Thanks for your help.

You should keep the particle system below the subsurf, and in the particle system check ‘use modifier stack’ Also keep your subusrf view and render levels the same 1/1 or 2/2
