I’ve tried to find if anyone has posted on this before and I found nothing. So here goes:
Valve software is about to release Half Life 2 (September 2003). The first Half Life was the poster child for the game mod community. But the modeling tool that Valve is using is Softimage’s XSI. (http://www.softimage.com/home/press/PressReleases/030515_Valve_HL2_XSI.htm) This is a bit on the pricey side for your average hobbyist I would think.
This seems to me to be a wonderful opportunity to get Blender out there as the “Unofficial Official Model Tool” for Half Life 2. Unless it requires capabilities beyond those of Blender. I don’t know.
Can anyone else make a more educated guesses than I can? What does everyone think?
it would require capabilities beyond those of blender
but only current verions
if the python api were to include access to armatures, I don’t know what else would be neceescary to write an exproter. There are planns for such a feature (armatures in the python api) but I don’t know when they will bear fruit.
It would be very nice, but the mod community that wishes to build characters for Half Life 2 would complain and complain about how difficult the interface of blender is (they have to gasp learn something new). Not that I’ll listen though.
yeah i have thought about it b4 [except HL instead of HL2 ] but i dont know jack about programming. it would be really cool and i would totally support it maybe even write tuts.
