Halo has too many lines!

Dear All,

I’m trying to reproduce something like this (the program this was done with does not do animation, which I need):

… but am having real problems with Halos. When I did a simple test by putting geometry with holes infront of a spotlight… this happens:

Although the geometry is quite simple, the halo contains way too many ‘beams’ or lines, specially further to the outer edges of the picture.

Can anyone explain what I might be doing wrong here, I tried playing with all the settings to no avail.

Are some of the other renderers that Blender works with are better for doing light / haze simulations?

Thanks in advance.

There are actually the correct amount there. The appearance of beams overlapping creates the illusion of more beams.
