Nice work with the tree branch above. Consider fall colored leaves? Reds, yellows, etc. The image is overwhelmingly green.
Think about changing the lighting to accentuate the eyes/face of the ogre - his face is lost in shadow. At the risk of “cheesy-ness” you might do a very slight volumetric spotlight on him in a dappled-sunlight way.
The main tree root still doesn’t look gnarled and detailed enough, IMO, which is only an issue because it’s in the foreground. Exposed tree roots look a lot like branches, really. (google some tree root photos, you’ll see what I mean.) The root shouldn’t so much sit on top of the ground as dig itself into it, almost like a clutching hand.
Here is a small update. I tried out the fall colors, and I really like them. I have been trying to use a halo spotlight to have some light streaming in through the trees, but to no avail. For some reason I couldn’t get the spotlight to break into streaks. I tried it with shadow buffer and raytraced spots, and neither worked. By the way, I have a large yellow spotlight and a light blue spotlight shining at the whole scene from opposite directions, and a low powered hemi as a fill light, plus the dedicated spot for the ogre, which I am experimenting with. Thanks for all the comments! They have really helped me get this far in the project.
Here’s a link to what I mean by lighting textures. A really good tut, even if you don’t use it here. Just a little light to make the eye focus on the ogre’s face…nothing too over-done.
Ok, I decided to bite the bullet and redo all the leaves by hand on the branch above. Before there was a bunch of leaves just hanging in the air… quite unrealistic. I also added a spot for the ogre’s face and switched the positions of the two main spots. Before the sun was coming from the left corner downward, now it’s the other corner. I also tweaked the grass a little, and did some weight painting around the small clearing in the grass. I think it kind of gives the impression that the ogre spends a lot of time there. Tell me what you think! By the way Eku, thanks for taking so much interest in my progress. You’ve helped me a lot!
I think you’re pretty much there. You could tweak here and there, if something bugs you, but I don’t see anything I’d change. Very nice image, conveys exactly what you set out to convey - well done!
