This is my progress so far in 8 months of using Blender.
After much work on my medieval town I named “Blendstadt”, and how it should look like, I think I have come to an end of the city planning and environment.
Now I need to make it more realistic looking, but I can’t… It still looks like “toy buildings”.
It doesn’t look photorealisic, but what do you think anyway?
Nice work. I think it does look like toy buildings, what it probably wrong is the camera placement. Also this piece seems to lack a subject.
What you need to do is think about foreground, middle ground, and background. Light and model each of these elements with a clear understanding of what role they play in the picture. Without knowing where the subject or focal point is, it is hard to determine where you need to work more, add extra detail, concentrate lighting and DOF.
Where is the camera? Is it floating in midair, or is it anchored to a tripod behind a railing of a balcony across the street?
Looks good so far, but…yeah, it does have a “toy building” look.
I think it looks somewhat “flat”. (Ironic for a 3d application, right?) Most of the image is rather dark, maybe lightening those areas would help, and what is lit seems somewhat inconsistent. The tree on the left looks like it’s casting shadows in multiple directions, and the shadows on the left side are way too large. The buildings seem to be intersecting each other. The texture on the ground may be a bit too large.
Thank you for your comment. It is supposed to have a light-dark contrast, because of the time of year and location on the globe.
The shadows cast by the tree is cast by more than one tree. I only have on lamp with shadows on, so I don’t really think that could be the problem. Unless, of course, Blender is rendering the lights the wrong way, which I suppose it doesn’t.
There is no environment lighting. I use a Hemi to light the shadows lightly.
