Hard black and white shading

I didn’t particularly know how to word this query.

I’m looking to create a look similar to a film called Renaissance. I have never seen it but liked the way in which there is no gradient between black and white.

The trailer is here for you to look at - http://www.apple.com/trailers/miramax/renaissance/trailer1/

I’ve been dabbling with the lighting and shading settings for a few hours now and can’t come up with anything workable.

I apologise if this has been addressed before. I didn’t know what exactly to search for.

Help would be most appreciated.

 I might be mistaken, but I think what you are looking for is the TOON SHADER ! (no, not the Ton shader)

To do a black and white effect with no gradient, it is pretty straight forward. Go into the Shading mode (F5) and in the shader tab choose Toon for both diffuse and spec.

Set the spec to 0 for each sliders.
For diffuse, set ref to 1, smooth between 0 and 0.01 (0.01 will give a nice crisp smoothing, while 0 will smooth nothing) and set size at your convenience.

Of course diffuse color should be white. Else you will have a red/black or a blue/black thing

Here is an example made by Class Kuhnen

Not that the image does have gradient, but because he wanted them. The parameters I indicate is for no gradient and only black and white.

Hope it helps
