Hard corners / edges in subsurfed objects?

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere - I did search first!

I am very new to cgi and blender (just learning my way at the moment) and I’d like to find out if there is a way to get hard folds / creases into an object which you’ve subsurfed. My guess is that you can’t, because subsurfing seems to apply to a whole object, not just a selected set of verts. If this is the case, what is the best way to achieve say a ‘hard’ cornered cube with a nicely subsurfed hemispherical depression in one face (the interface between the depression and the cube face also being a hard crease)?
thanks
Matt

The closer together the rows of verticies are the harder the edge will be. You may have to add more vertices with the knife tool. This pic should illustrate what I mean.

Perfect!
Thanks for that - time for some experimentation
