Hard Edge and Surface

I am trying to get a shape and texture like in this picture:

http://cgcookie.com/blender/2011/03/07/tip-using-the-simple-deform-modifier/

Don’t watch the whole video. The picture alone should be enough.

But my own model keeps coming out all rounded (note the edge of the grooves) like as in the attachment. Mine looks kind of like it was made by rubbermaid, whereas the tutorial is more like hard plastic

Can anyone recommend a technique for smoothing out the sphere while not rounding out the edges?

Thank you!

If you’re trying to match the model in the video you linked to why not just follow the steps in the tutorial?

I thought I did, but I cant tell what I am missing. Besides the problem seems to crop up in other projects too.

Jonathan is probably using an edge split modifier, he likes it a lot for sharp edges.
If that’s too much sharpness you can use edge weights (Shift+E) to increase the edge weight.

I double checked the tutorial. The shape of the object is assumed at the outset. He just uses the mesh he has already built just to demonstrate the simple deform modifier.

Okay, will try it.

That should read “use edge weights instead” since adding edge weights on top of the split modifier would do nothing.

My brain isn’t fully functional today, Edge split will cause gaps when combined with subdivision.
So just use the edge weights or you can try a bevel modifier, just keep in mind that beveling can cause issues with subdividing as well.

That helped a lot. (see new attachment)

But there is one last thing. If you look at the new attachment, you may notice the edges of the sphere are still a bit angular.

Not sure what’s going wrong there.
