Hard edges in a subsurf

Is there a way to make edges unafeccted by a subsurf, so they stay sharp, but the rest gets subsurfed?

I’m a noob so i don’t know how much help I’ll be but you could always just make the components as seperate objects and apply subsurf only to certain ones. That’s the only way i know how.

This question comes up a lot. You can choose to use ctrl-r to add a loop cut, and position the edge loop close to the edge that you want to be sharp.

Another way to achieve the same thing is to create creases using “shift-e” in edit mode with the edge/edges selected. You can read about the tool on this page…
http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Manual/Subsurf
(scroll down to “Weighted creases for subdivision surfaces”)

The crease technique is what I was looking for. I already thought about seperate objects and loop cuts, but I thought there would be a better way. Thanks for the replies!

Sometimes you may find EdgeSplit modifier (http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Manual/EdgeSplit_Modifier) useful. It works really well in certain cases.
