Hardware Reccomendation for Aspiring Modeler

Hi there,

My 14 year old son has become very proficient at Blender, and it seems his 3 year old system is reaching the edge of its capabilities for his needs. He is quite interested in pursuing his interest in computer animation as a career, so I am happy to update his machine to provide better capability. He does two things with his computer: model/rig/render (and whatever is associated with all that) and play games.

Currently he has:

  • AMD FX-6300 3.5GHZ CPU
  • ASRock 990FX Extreme3 AM3+ AMD 990FX + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
  • ZOTAC GeForce GTX 960 4G AMP! GPU
  • 8GB DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900)

I think the GPU is sufficient, but he would like to change to a i5 6600k 3.5GHZ processor and whatever parts he would need (MB, new MEM, PS, etc.) to go with that. Is that a good jump? I’m wondering if he wouldn’t be better off $$$ to performance with a AMD FX 9590? I’m assuming that will need a mobo and new memory also, but I’m hoping the GPU still works for him. Any guidance you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

CHeers,
