Having a linked duplicate have its own texture? Can it be done?

When you duplicate an object with Alt-D it uses the texture that the main object has. Is it possible to have it so that the linked objects can have their own texture settings?

yep, just select the object and press U and then select the option ‘make single user object’ or something like that.

Actually that doesn’t work, it just unlinks it from the main object, so Ithat doesn’t help me have have multiple objects with the same design data have different textures.
