Having compositor open affects workspace performance

For one of my blender projects, while “Use Nodes” is active, making any changes in the compositor (including changing the active frame) causes performance to plummet, and this is despite the fact that both “Compositing” and “Sequencer” post-processing options are unchecked. Performance options are on too.

For this video, I have deleted all compositor nodes for sake of simplicity, but making any changes in the node tree gives the same effect demonstrated in the screen capture.

All my other .blend files work without performance problems like this, so it shouldn’t be related to my system. I would really appreciate any tips on troubleshooting this problem.

I guess these Post-processing are considered for rendering, not for preview.
You have to disable it with “Use nodes”.

The thing is, there are zero nodes in the workspace. It is not doing any compositing, at least it is not supposed to. I have no inputs or outputs of any sort yet the program seems to be busy doing work.

Yes, it is rendering the current frame if you change the pointer in the timeline.

This can’t be true. Auto-render is turned off and it’s not outputting any images, nor does it generate composited images. There are no renders saved in the view layer and no view layer inputs to work off of. I’ve never had blender render frames automatically despite that option being turned off before.

There is no update in your render layer node?

Not that I’m aware of. There are no nodes in the compositing workspace and no output renders from the “Render Output” in the image editor.
